Chukar Hunts
Are you looking for a thrill? Come join High desert guide service, in a fully guided wild chuckar hunt deep in the Western Mojave Desert. We conduct are hunts on more than 100,000 acre private ranch.
The hunt begins usually with you arriving at are front door between 4:00am & 5:00am in the morning. We usually down a cup of coffe and set out to the field. We usually arrive at the ranch at about 6:30am.
We usually like to break the hunting party down into smaller groups. Depending on the size of the group we usually hunt with three to four persons per guide. All guides are equipped with walkie talkies and calls. We recommend that you as well bring your own personal radio and chuckar calls. Dogs are as well welcomed on the ranch. However if they chase cattle we will ask you to put them away!
With all that said the hunt begins. Depending on the year and the locations of the chuckar we could be hunting rolling hills to rocky outcroppings. Usually in chuckar hunting the name of the game is to get to the top and hunt them down when hunting hills or mountains. Chuckar, like quail once broken up will call back and forth between each other. When this phenomenum happens, most hunters have there best chance of bagging birds. We usually hunt for several hours or until about 12:30pm. Then we call everyone off the mountain and break for lunch for about an hour or as long as you would like.
We must warn that chuckar hunting is a very athletic activity. More often times then not most people usually after lunch have shot a few birds and have filled there heads full of enough hunting memories for one day. However for the hardcore chuckar hunter we do plan hunts for all day adventures.
What we offer:
- We offer delicious breakfast crossiants prepared fresh every morning. The crossant usually has three sausage patties, eggs, cheese, and any condiments you would like upon it. They can seriously satisfy a hungry hunter in the early hours of the morning.
- We also offer huge lunch subs that are as well prepared fresh that morning. The subs are packed with turkey, salami, ham, cheese and are drenched with Italian dressing. Once again you can apply any condiments you would like such as, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and peperchinis.
- We as well provide drinks for in the field and for your breakfast and lunch.
- # We also provide ammunition in the field for those who left it at home. However ammunition in the field is somewhat pricy, so don’t forget your own ammunition.
- In the field we offer bird cleaning and packaging for an additional charge.
- We also provide are dogs to find downed birds in the field. Once again you can bring your own dog just make sure they don’t chase cattle. Or keep a shock collar on your dog.
- We also offer transportation for small groups of hunters, two to three hunters per party.
What we recommend:
- We recommend that you bring a 12ga shotgun. Guns can be either pump, semi auto, or over and under. We personally recommend a semi auto shotgun with a modified or better choke in the barrel.
- We also recommend you use either #4 or #5 shot on chuckar. We personally use Winchester #5 super x pheasant loads.
- We recommend a radio as well would be a good idea to bring along on your hunt.
- We recommend a gamevest instead of gamebelts due to the fact that chuckar usually weigh anywhere from one pound to a pound in a half. If you have ever had a bag full of these you would understand the burden the weigh of these birds would put on your hips and waist.
- We highly recommend a good pair of boots. 8” to 10” tops are preferred for your ankle support while hiking.
- We also highly recommend the use of truesage camo. However any sort of desert pattern camo will do.
- We also recommend for hot days that you wear a hat and sunscreen.
- Lastly we recommend a 4x4 truck equipped with off road tires our all terrain tires. That means no low riders. We have found that oil pans and rocks do not agree with each other.
